Pharmaceutical-grade Magnesium Sulfate in a 2 kg format. In the barn, Epsom Salts earns its place as the go-to drawing agent for hoof abscesses β but itβs also a reliable tool for wound soaks, swelling reduction, and oral laxative use in horses and livestock. A barn staple that does several jobs well. Supplied by Dominion Veterinary Laboratories Ltd., Winnipeg, Canada (Est. 1946).
π¬ Veterinary Applications
A horse with a hoof abscess is lame, often severely. Epsom Salts mixed into a warm wet poultice draws the infection toward the surface, softens the hoof wall, and reduces the pressure thatβs causing the pain. Applied under a poultice boot or wrapped with a diaper and duct tape, itβs the standard first-response treatment before the farrier or vet arrives.
Mix 250β500 g into a bucket of warm water. Soak the hoof for 20β30 minutes, or pack as a wet poultice under a boot. Repeat twice daily until the abscess bursts or resolves.
Warm Epsom Salt soaks draw fluid from swollen tissue, reduce inflammation, and help clean infected wounds in horses and livestock. Particularly useful for lower leg injuries, infected cuts, and swollen joints where soaking is practical.
Dissolve 250 g per 4 L of warm water. Soak affected area for 15β20 minutes, 1β2 times daily.
Magnesium Sulfate is a traditional oral saline laxative used in horses and cattle to stimulate gut motility and soften impacted feed material in mild colic and constipation cases. Administered by stomach tube under veterinary direction.
Dosing by veterinarian only β typically 250β500 g dissolved in water and administered via nasogastric tube in horses.
A standard pharmaceutical excipient used in veterinary compounding formulas requiring a saline laxative, osmotic agent, or magnesium source.
As directed by compounding formula.
